Winter Frames 4x4 Color Charts
And Appliqu Directions

*Please Note! These frames stitch better if you complete the decorative stitches inside
the frame before trimming the applique material. After stitching the decorative stitches
(garlands, lace edgings, bows, holly, etc.) then trim around the Second Frame Outline
before stitching the final Applique satin stitch edges.

Recommended Tools: Small curved, very sharp scissors. The best scissors for this
project and also for other appliqu projects are from the Scissor Man at: www.tools-
gadgets.com see Embroidery Nips.

Appliqu Instructions

Hoop the fabric you are planning to appliqu. Cut a piece of stabilizer slightly larger
than your hoop, spray lightly with temporary spray adhesive, and place on the bottom of
the hoop, covering all edges of the hoop. Place hoop on firm surface face up and smooth
hooped fabric onto sprayed stabilizer with your hand. Or use an iron-on stabilizer,
covering the fabric in an area larger than your hoop, then hoop the stabilized fabric.
Depending on the weight of your garment fabric, you may need to use another piece of
tear-a-way stabilizer. Slip this piece under your hoop before beginning to stitch.

For all Appliqu Material/Appliqu Position stitch sequences: Stitch the first stitch
sequence, Appliqu Material, in the color specified, or a color of your choice. (This will
show you exactly where the appliqu material will be placed.) Cut a piece of appliqu
fabric slightly larger than this outline stitch. Spray the back of this fabric lightly with
temporary spray adhesive and place, sticky side down, over the outline stitching. Be sure
to cover all of the outline stitching.

*Stitch the next sequence, Appliqu Position, in the same color. (This will stitch the
appliqu material into position on your background fabric.) Remove the hoop from your
machine, but do not remove the fabric from the hoop. Carefully cut around this entire
outline stitching as close as possible, without cutting through the stitching, removing the
excess appliqu fabric. Put the hoop back in your machine and stitch the next stitch
sequence.

Usually, the next stitch sequence will be Appliqu. (This is the finishing satin stitch
edging on the appliqu.) The Appliqu Stitch sequence should be sewn in a color that
matches the fabric unless otherwise noted. Some times it is necessary to stitch other parts
of the design before stitching the finishing Appliqu satin stitch edging. When this is the
case in this set of designs, do not jump ahead in the stitch sequence.
